Who's behind HFN?

A Zelda Fan for the past 21 years, I have been known as "The Wolfess" within the community for most of that time. I am most well known for a Twilight Princess fan fiction, The Doppelganger Trilogy, and a few editorials published on Zelda Universe and Zelda Dungeon. See below for a full list of those articles.

I have a Masters Degree in Creative Writing and experience with history, education, literary analysis, and business. I live in Minnesota, USA.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What version of the timeline will you be following?

Anchor 2

Nintendo has published two versions of the official timeline. The first was in Hyrule Historia in 2011, where the Hero of Legend from A Link to the Past travels to Holodrum and Labrynna before washing ashore on Koholint Island in Link's Awakening. Seven years later, in Zelda Encyclopedia, Link's Awakening and the two Oracle games were flipped.

Although there is some debate about which version of the timeline is "more official" based upon who primarily oversaw the production of the second book, the revised timeline is considered canon. In the past, I have played through the Hero of Legends saga in the 2011 order, so this time I will play through it in the 2018 order. This will give me an opportunity to contrast the two orders and determine which makes the most sense according to the in-game evidence.

2. What about Breath of the Wild?

Anchor 11

Eiji Aomuna, producer for the Legend of Zelda series, has gone on record saying that the latest Zelda game, Breath of the Wild, goes "at the end" of the timeline--meaning, at the end of all three timeline splits. This creates a difficult situation for my chronological playthrough. Do I play it three times--at the end of each timeline split? Do I wait until the very end to play it? Where will I place BotW?

After some debate, I have decided to play it at the end of the Child Timeline split. There are some great videos by HMK and the Commonwealth Realm explaining why Breath of the Wild fits so nicely in this timeline split in particular, so I recommend watching those for an in-depth analysis.

3. What version of "X" game will you be playing?

Anchor 12

The 20 Zelda games have had many different releases on different consoles. In taking on a task like this, which version do you choose to play? The original version on the original console? The original version on a newer console? The remake or remastered version?

For my playthrough, I will be playing the "optimal" versions as generally agreed upon by the Zelda Community. Here is the full outline for those who are interested:

  • Skyward Sword: Original Wii version, physical copy, on Wii U Console

  • The Minish Cap: Original GBA version, physical copy, on DS

4. Do you have an upload schedule?

Anchor 3

I publish a new Field Note every Wednesday (I try for an AM upload when possible). If I have extra time (like a holiday or vacation) then I may upload an occasional bonus Field Note.

5. Can I get notified when new Field Notes are published?

Anchor 4

Yes! Just sign up for our newsletter or subscribe to the RSS feed to never miss a new Field Note. Newsletters go out every other week due to wix restrictions.

6. How can I get in contact with you?

Anchor 5

Please go to the contact page and fill out the form to contact me.

7. What kind of playthrough are you doing?

Anchor 6

There are many different ways to play a Zelda game. A Completionist Playthrough ensures that 100% is achieved at the end of the game. A Speedrunner will play through the game as fast as possible, often using glitches to skip portions of the game.

Although I am normally a completionist, for this project I will simply be going through the main objectives as fast as possible (although not quite speedrunner fast). I will also be doing all of the side quests and other story-related content. I may not get all of the optional objectives, such as heart pieces, skulltulas, rings, etc.

8. What other Zelda editorials have you written?

Since I have been such a big fan of the series for so long, I have written a fair number of articles that have made their way onto some of the biggest Zelda websites, such as Zelda Universe and Zelda Dungeon. Here are some links to those articles:

My work on the Hyrulian Pantheon has also been cited by some popular Zelda YouTubers. Check out their videos at the YouTube links below:

9. Where can I read your Zelda fan fiction?

Anchor 8

The Doppelganger Trilogy can be read in its entirety on fanfiction.net. There is also a fan-page on facebook where many fans of the trilogy have sent in fan art and interacted directly with me.

The three books in the trilogy are: The Hero of Wolves, Shadow Kingdom, and Stasis.

10. What are your top 5 Zelda games?

Anchor 9

A classic--and fun--question for every Zelda fan! For me, my top five can be a moving target, but here is how it stands today:

  1. Breath of the Wild

  2. Majora's Mask

  3. Twilight Princess

  4. Ocarina of Time

  5. Link's Awakening

Skyward Sword is close behind Link's Awaking for me. I'll never forget what it felt like to draw the Master Sword from its pedestal myself after over 12 years of being a fan.

11. Any recomendations for other great Zelda articles?

Anchor 10

Before the age of YouTube giants in the Zelda Community, Zelda websites and their amazing volunteer writers were at the forefront of Zelda theory and analysis. There have been so many amazing articles written over the years by some amazing fans. Here are some of my top reccomendations:
